Hiroshima | Little Tokyo

Little Tokyo is the fourth album by Hiroshima on the Heads Up label and the band continues its artistic mission of bridging cultural divides through the power of music. Founded in east L.A. by Japanese Americans Dan and June Kuramoto, the album is named for a well known Asian neighborhood in Southern California - the music combines Asian, Latin American, African American and more influences into their compositions.
The eleven tracks on “Little Tokyo” embrace numerous musical styles and a band that knows how to weave them together into a satisfying musical blend. “Midnight Sun” is the album’s opener and combines a Middle Eastern hook while spotlighting the work of two taiko drum masters ~ Longtime group member, Shoji Kameda and his Teacher, Kenny Endo. June Kuramoto’s koto brings the Asian influence providing the combination of multi-cultural elements into the song.
Heads Up label-mate and guest keyboardist James Lloyd, from Pieces of a Dream appears on “Lanai.” The track offers both the contemporary jazz flavor of Dan Kuramoto’s tenor sax and the Asian sensibilities of June Kuramoto’s koto.
“Sir Charles” a mid-tempo piece combines June Kuramoto’s koto against the congas, timbales, and percussion of guest Richie Gajate Garcia. At any time on this multi-cultural track, one can hear elements of Asian, Latin, rock and pop music.
The set’s closer “Little Tokyo Underground” provides the members of the group an opportunity to stretch out by setting up funky grooves and working them to their maximum potential. The song provides multi-cultural musical playing and an excellent way to end this extremely satisfying experience!
