June April | What I Am?

Recently I was blessed to stumble into this talented singer, songwriter, poet, and activist named June April. The gifted Harlem reared songstress vocal style is a tapestry of her indelible gospel roots, entangled with an abundance of jazz, and cultivated by the ambiance of her Neo-Soul voicing.

What I found amazing about June April’s “What I Am” is how she encompass a unique perspective on praising the Lord by tapping into her spirit, and zeal for jazz, and soul music. She eloquently does so by exalting with praises, and worshiping the Lord is truly a testimony of who she is in Christ!

After several listens, one of the most distinctive renditions out of the hymnal book is the definitive Gospel classic “At The Cross” without a doubt made me shout! On this, and many other selections she makes her mark not only as a vocalist but a superb musician as well. Furthermore, I found myself captivated by her faith, range, dexterity, and inventive lyrical style that’s engulfs in the intimate and expressive linage that derives from the Caribbean to New York is etched note for note into the fabric of Gospel music with a generous seasoning of jazz makes this a remarkable recording by her.

One word, “unique” comes to mind after this joyous encounter with the music of this phenomenal songwriter, arranger, and vocal talent. Yes, chances are the Lord is smiling from above as another gifted voice sings praises, and honor to His great and Holy name. If by chance, your appetite for an indigenous sounds of gospel, and jazz with a hint of Neo Soul lingering around the outer edge then this uplifting spiritual revival will definitely be one to cherish as you immerse yourself into the world of June April's second recording appropriately titled "What I Am?"
