Jill Scott | The Light Of The Sun

Album Review: Jill Scott | The Light Of The Sun
By Susan Mutharia

There is a beam that has been radiating on Jill Scott. It has filled her with a glow, energized her flow and created a remarkable illumination known as The Light of The Sun. Jill Scott’s new album which was released on 06/21/2011 is nothing short of splendid. The beautiful singer/writer/poet/actress and mother has walked us through what she is, who she is, where she is and what she has been through without losing her element.

The album sets off with Jill Scott telling us what she is – So Blessed. In the song, the Grammy award winner acknowledges and counts every blessing from waking up feeling refreshed and with a peace of mind, to the birth of her healthy and beautiful son.  She may have struggles but those do not outweigh the blessings. This is her testimony.

The up-tempo track So In Love which was the albums first single featuring Anthony Hamilton follows. This opens up to other noteworthy collaborations in the album including one with Eve in the track Shame, the infamous beat boxer Doug E. Fresh in the track All Cried Out Redux  and Paul Wall in the track So Gone (What My Mind Says).

Even the strong and feisty woman gets vulnerable. Keeping it honest, Miss Scott shares a very emotional side of her journey in the song Hear My Call. In the song, the artist calls to God to heal her from the bruises that have left her afraid. The lyrics may be a reflection of some of the emotions she felt in the last couple of years while navigating through some challenges in her personal life. What challenges you ask? Well, she knew you were asking too. Listening to the song Quick might shed some light.

Staring at the rear view mirror is not her style. In the next couple of songs, Miss Scott explores new horizons. In the song Making You Wait she seeks to know the worth of her new possibilities while in Until Then (I Imagine), she continues to imagine what she wants “when she needs to feel sexy”. A true Jill Scott album has to have some recited poetry in the mix. We get our fix in the woman empowering song Womanifesto. We already know what she is – blessed. Still wondering who she is, listen to this song.

It is very rare today to love every song in an album. The Light Of The Sun is one of those rare album. I would not expect any less from Jill Scott because this is a trend that she has set in the past. This is the reason she will continue to be in the list of ‘all-day-every-day-any-day’ artists we cannot get enough of. You must own this album.
